Intelligence, Military and Technical Vocabulary

Important note! The KL-7 encrypts letters, numbers and spaces into a letters-only ciphertext. This requires the SPACE, FIG and LET keys to piggyback on the letters X, J and V. To enable this, the KL-7 decrypts the letters Z into X, and J into Y. Therefore, the decrypted word AXIMUT should be interpret as AZIMUT, and abbreviation DOY as DOJ. When a decrypted word contains the letter X or Y, the intended letter will be obvious, as it is phonetically similar. Any plaintext X or Y is unaffected by the piggyback and remains X or Y after decryption. More info in the KL-7 Letters and Figures section.
