Audio Recording Guidelines & Tips
Crypto's Cast Authors Only

The Crypto's Cast topics vary, and the choice is yours. The goal is to bring interesting bite-size stories for crypto enthusiasts and also tickle the interest of listeners with limited or no knowledge on cryptography. Possible topics are cryptologic history, its technology and science, important historical events that were influenced by cryptography, renown cryptologists, cipher machines, the making and breaking of codes and crypto algorithms, crypto and privacy, books and websites.

Your recording should be in English, and some 15 minutes long, to keep them bite-size for the listener. The file size should not exceed 5 megabytes, give or take a megabyte, to limit monthly bandwidth. Recording format is mp3, mono and 56 or 64 kbps constant bitrate, keeping the file size within the limit. However, if you're not familiar with audio settings, no worries. Record as you like, and we recompile the audio with the proper settings.

The well-known free Audacity editing and recording app is quite handy to cut and paste, edit pauses, or remove mistakes, but the choice of software is all yours. If you were to use Audacity, then export (i.e. save) your recording as mp3-file, Mono Channel, 44100 Hz, constant, 56 kbps, providing both good audio quality and modest file size. Visit the Audacity website for more info. After installation, select your language in the menu Edit/Preferences/Interface/Language.

If you want to record as much as possible information within the 15 minutes limit, then writing a script and test-reading could help. An extensive introduction in your recording is not required, as we will write an introduction text, including links to additional information, that accompanies your recording, or you could write your own introduction. A short introduction about you and the subject at the beginning of the recording is therefore more than sufficient.

We will add an intro and outro tune to your mp3 recording, and also the metadata tags for your name, your full copyrights, and the Crypto's Cast logo, which will be visible in audio players. When your mp3 file is too large, we recompile it with a lower bitrate, ensuring audio quality and preserving all content.

The authors retain full rights to their recording and accompanied image or logo and have the right to edit or remove their published recording by simple e-mail request. Only if really necessary, the Cipher Machines and Cryptology website preserves the right to remove older recordings, to respect bandwidth limits and ensure proper functioning of the website. In that case, the author is notified and retains the full rights, including redistribution of his work at will.
